NDMA Warns Tourists to Avoid Northern Areas Amid Monsoon Dangers

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a travel advisory asking people to avoid visiting northern and hilly areas during the monsoon season due to risks of landslides and flash floods. Acting on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives, NDMA has told authorities to restrict tourism in vulnerable regions, with law enforcement ordered to strictly enforce the curbs. Section 144 may also be imposed if needed to protect lives and support rescue work.

According to NDMA, several key routes have been blocked by heavy rains and landslides. The Jaglot–Skardu Road and access routes to Gilgit, Jaglot, Guru, and Naltar are completely closed. Multiple bridges have also been damaged, including Somro Bridge in Ghanche, and Saltoro and Baghicha bridges in Skardu. Roads in Ghizer’s Dayan, Thali Baroq, and Kalti are shut, while the Gilgit–Hunza corridor (covering Gulmit and Gojal) and the Babusar Top route are also closed.

The advisory also highlighted ongoing dangers in Torghar, Battagram, Shangla, Lower Kohistan, Tata Pani, Gilgit, Hunza, and Swat. Citizens have been urged to avoid non-essential travel, remain cautious, and follow only official updates until weather conditions improve.
